I'm sure that you had nice and painful past.  It depends whether you want to open up or close it.Of course you have some reasons which may open up scars.

Presence
Your Past dictate the presence.Did you learn any lesson from the past?How do you survive? The past should not harbour you.
Is this the time to start afresh?Clean the ashes.

Future
Fortunately all the human beings have their eyes in front of their forehead Of which according to my interpretation would mean  focus forward,look what you see.If we can learn from that.

Conclusion
In this world,we need to be firm and believe in the survival of our dreams.There will be always the opposing forces.Unfortunately  some succumb to the pressures.
